The Ten Thousand Dollar Education
Everything Dick Press does differently, it learned here.
Remember Who the F*ck You Are is a memoir about being told who to be and deciding otherwise. Katie wrote it, paid a publisher ten thousand dollars to put it into the world, and then spent the next year learning what that money had and had not bought.
It bought a cover she saw for the first time with a twenty four hour window to approve it. It bought an edit that put a note in the margin of a chapter about her family saying that part did not matter to the story. She kept the chapter. Nobody had told her she was allowed to.
Months after the launch she went looking for her copyright registration, could not find one, and asked for a registration number and a filing date. She never got either. So she filed it herself, for sixty five dollars, at her own kitchen table.
The book did well anyway. It hit number one in its categories on launch day. She narrated the audiobook in her own voice. Readers sent photographs of it on their kitchen tables and by their pools and in their hands at two in the morning.
None of which changes the fact that she spent a year of her life feeling like a guest in her own book.
So she asked the question that started everything: what would it look like if no author ever had to go through this?
Dick Press Publishing is the answer. Every rule here is a scar. The author approves her own cover, on her own clock, with no clock at all if she needs one. The copyright is registered in her name, every time, without her having to ask. She sees what every person on her book is being paid. Nobody is assigned to her book without her say so.
Built from experience. Built from anger turned to purpose. Built for every writer, in every genre, sitting on a book the world needs to read.
